6 Powerful Ways Yoga Boosts Mental Health & Enhances Overall Well-Being
(Stick around for a special gift at the end—or, you know, just scroll down if you can't wait! 😄🎁)
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of yoga?
Is it the bendy poses, the upside-down inversions, or those intense twists that make you wonder if people have bones at all?
That’s exactly how I used to see yoga—until I became a certified teacher in yoga, pranayama, & breath work. Today, I understand that yoga is so much more than impressive poses. It’s about connecting mind, body, soul & breath. It’s about connecting with the deeper layers of our existence and transforming mental health & emotional well-being.
Yoga is a way of being & living. It’s a practice that extends beyond the mat.
In our fast-paced world, where endless to-do lists reign and being “busy” is worn like a badge of honor, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind. Notice how often people respond to “How are you?” with “I’m so busy.” This constant rush can take a toll on our mental well-being & overall wellbeing, leaving us disconnected from ourselves. The word "busy" used to make me anxious for some reason for a long time. Nowadays, I replace it with "being productive". "Being productive" is much more appealing to my mind. Feel free to give it a try and see if it's a good fit for you.
In recognition of National Yoga Awareness Month this September, let’s explore how yoga, an ancient practice, can offer powerful tools to enhance mental health & overall well-being. Also re-establishing that broken connection with self that might have taken a back seat with so much going around you.
1. Yoga as a Tool for Managing Anxiety & Depression
As a Life Coach, I work 1:1 with clients to build holistic approaches to managing stress, anxiety & depression. A highly effective tool in my toolbox is the practice of yoga. Please know that this is something that requires continued practice & discipline and not something that just works overnight. I love calling my Yoga practice a journey. There is no destination to reach, only a journey to embrace and enjoy. Studies have shown that yoga can be an effective complementary treatment for anxiety and depression. By combining physical movement with breath work and mindfulness, yoga regulates the body's stress response and boosts the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which are linked to improved mood.
Try this: Gentle yoga, which includes passive stretches and long-held poses. For those who suffer from anxiety or depression, this can be particularly helpful. When practicing these poses, be aware of how your breath changes as you move from one pose to another.
2. Boosting Mental Clarity
Have you ever ended a busy day, feeling like your mind is shutting down, but still unable to slow the pace?
To stop your mind from being so hyperactive, do you reach out for your phone to scroll mindlessly?
Imagine walking through a dense forest, branches blocking your path at every turn, making it hard to see where you're headed. But when the branches clear, the way forward becomes obvious. Our minds are much the same. When thoughts race endlessly at one million per second or we are jumping from one task to the next, finding clarity or direction seems impossible aka “auto pilot” Mode.
Yoga's focus on controlled breathing (pranayama) can enhance focus & mental clarity. Deep belly breathing or alternate nostril breathing stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system in the brain, resulting in a sense of calm alertness. Enhanced clarity not only aids in better decision-making, but also reduces mental fatigue and brain fog.
Try this: Alternate nostril breathing (Nadi Shodhana) is known for calming the mind and boosting focus. Close one nostril and inhale, then switch and exhale through the opposite nostril. Repeat for a few minutes to feel refreshed.
3. Releasing Emotional Tension
As a Life Coach, I often ask clients where they feel stress, trauma, or stuck emotions in their physical bodies. The most common places are around the chest, around the shoulders, or in the lower abdomen. Stuck emotions often manifest as physical tension in the body.
There's no doubt that our bodies are extremely intelligent, and they store a ridiculous amount of information, even the ones we often overlook. Our bodies are always communicating with us about their needs if we are willing to slow down, listen, and identify them early on.
Yoga helps release this stored tension. Through a combination of gentle stretches & deeper, more intense poses, you can unlock areas of emotional stagnation. Over time, with daily practice this process helps you release pent-up feelings & creates space for healing, balance & emotional well-being.
Try this: Child’s Pose, Camel Pose, hip openers or twists can release emotional & physical tension, offering relief and a sense of openness.
Watch this video to try the amazing Camel Pose & open up your heart! If you're new to it, remember to listen to your body. If the stretch feels intense, pause and ease off. It took me a long time to reach this version. Resting your hands on your upper hips is a good place to start. Take your time and have fun!
4. Resilience & Self-Compassion:
Learning Chakrasana during my yoga teacher training was a personal journey of self-compassion & resilience. I failed countless times, being the last in my group to get it right. Do you remember being that person in a class where everyone got the results and they were waiting for you to get it right? LOL..that's not fun, is it? It is at those times that you need the most compassion from yourself.
But looking back, I am proud of myself for not giving up and not criticising myself while I was failing. And the day I finally nailed it, I was on cloud nine. This experience reminded me that growth comes from embracing the challenge, not rushing the result.
My yoga journey is uniquely mine, just as yours is uniquely yours. The same goes for life. Embrace the beautiful uniqueness within you and welcome self-compassion into your daily routine. You're doing amazing—keep going!
Yoga helps cultivate a deeper sense of self-compassion and resilience. As we move through challenging poses or find ourselves in moments of discomfort, yoga teaches us to breathe through it and stay present —allowing us to approach difficult situations with patience, self-kindness, and grace.
Try this: Next time you feel frustrated in a pose, pause and breathe. Remind yourself that growth comes with practice, and it’s okay to take things at your own pace. This mindset can help you build resilience in everyday life.
5. Yoga as a Stress Reliever:
Let’s bring science into the conversation. Research proves that consistent yoga practice reduces stress over time. High stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline can harm blood vessels and raise blood pressure. But studies show that regular yoga lowers cortisol, reduces inflammation, and decreases perceived stress.
Try this: Start your day off with a nice stretch. It could be a seated forward fold, slow hip rotations, or simply grabbing the top of the door to stretch your entire back (dependent on your hight and the height of the door). If you are a cat person, you can learn how to stretch from them, they do it so well, proudly & gracefully. As you stretch, focus on your breath. Afterwards, if you still have a few minutes to spare, consider scribbling down 3 things you're grateful for in your gratitude journal. This simple practice nurtures presence and a positive mindset.
6. Yoga Promotes Mindfulness & Presence
Our breath can only exist in the present—not the past or future. It's a simple truth & the perfect tool to deeply connect with the moment we’re in. Breathe, and be present.
Yoga encourages us to stay present in the moment. As we flow through different poses, we’re invited to focus on our breath and body sensations, which helps quiet the mind and promotes mindfulness. Being present allows us to step away from rumination and worry, reducing anxiety and fostering a greater sense of peace.
Try this: Meditation in motion. Take your yoga mat outside or walk in the park without your phone or headphones. Engage all 5 senses and fully connect with the present moment & the nature around. Feel the difference!
